Today, we did a day tour of Cappadocia with an American couple and a Taiwanese couple. We visited a pottery place, valleys, underground city, and we did a 3km hike in Meksinder Valley. The landscape is magnificent with its smooth lines, curves, flat surfaces and unique formations. Our tour took us to different valleys so we could view different shapes called "fairy chimneys".
We went to an underground city, which was used for protection during times of war, and was also used by the Christians as a hiding place from the Romans. Up to 5,000 people could live in the underground city. For a defense mechanism, they used a 1000 lb round stone that had a hole in the centre and these were placed at the end of each tunnel. When the intruders entered the tunnels, they would push these stones in place, then poke them through the centre with knives and swords. The underground city now has four levels, the others have eroded or collapsed over time. There are many twists and turns in the tunnels and are never really sure what level you are on. They were advanced in their workmanship wıth creating only one ventilation tunnel and this would ventilate all of the levels. There was one main kitchen, with cold storage, and there were also a couple of wineries. The men had it easy as they sat back, drank coffee or tea and played backgammon, while the woman made wine, cooked, and took care of the kids.
